Des Moines mayor's crappy cabin angers locals
Des Moines, Iowa, Mayor Frank Cownie is quite a hawk when it comes to demolishing nuisance homes. Since he took office on January 1, 2004, Cownie has voted more than 50 times to demolish homes after owners had failed to make improvements. The irony isn't lost on his other neighbors, the residents of Pine Island on Lake Vermilion in the Superior National Forest. They claim the cabin and the property Cownie owns has fallen into disrepair, the cabin missing windows and the weeds several feet tall. "It's an eyesore," says Steve Kent, a Des Moines resident and owner of a cabin two doors from Cownie's. "It's the kind he'd want to tear down in Des Moines, and I wish he would here."
