Deborah Howell was a true (redacted) original
By now you have no doubt heard the truly awful news that Deborah Howell, one of the most important women in American journalism, not to mention her titanic place in Minnesota's canon, has died as a result of a car accident in New Zealand.
Tributes to her profane spirit have poured in from many luminaries, but none so fine as David Carr's, which unfortunately suffers from the Gray Lady's old fashioned aversion to curse words. Hopefully no one will mind if we quote Howell in all her glory, at least how we imagine it would have sounded:
"You fucked up the middle name of the publisher of our newspaper in that fucking story you wrote the other day. I have no idea how you could be so fucking stupid, but I'm putting your application on the spike," she hissed. "You're a hard worker and a good writer, but none of that is going to make a difference if you can't get the facts straight."
