David Pettersen gets felony charge for trying to execute a Hollywood myth

Reader Patrick Solomon responds to David Petterson charged for fatally shooting fleeing would-be burglar:

"He fired multiple shots at the vehicle as it drove past, later telling police he'd tried to halt the car by shooting out its tires."

Pretty sure that new bill being debated in the legislature wouldn't apply to someone fleeing. How much danger was he in at that moment?

Also, there is no legitimate "shoot out the tires" or "shoot them in the leg/shoulder" method of defending yourself. That's a Hollywood invention, and it should get you serious time anywhere outside of fiction.

Bullets don't magically stop when you miss.
