Dan Drobac allegedly threatened to shoot woman after KFAN spoils end of Gophers game
A radio blaring KFAN would upset us too, but not as much as it upset Drobac and for different reasons.
Here's a good sign sports, sports, sports means too much to you -- you threaten to kill whoever spoils the end of games you've pre-recorded before you have a chance to watch them.
But that's allegedly what went down on January 18 after a utility worker's blaring radio spoiled the end of the Gophers men's basketball team's loss to Michigan for Eagan resident Dan Drobac.
The incident began around 9:30 a.m. that morning and culminated in a SWAT-team standoff that basically shut down the neighborhood around the 1600 block of Woodgate Lane for hours. From the Star Tribune:
The utility worker told police she was playing the sports station KFAN loudly so she could hear it while she worked on a utility box, according to the criminal complaint. She said Drobac yelled at her, then came out of the house screaming, "I'm not kidding. I'm going to [expletive] shoot you," according to the complaint.
Officers found a large kitchen knife in the snow about 10 feet from the utility box, the complaint said.
The woman called 911, and when police couldn't make contact with Drobac, roads were closed around the house and a recorded message was sent to about 238 homes advising the residents to stay inside until the incident was over. Police also said they worked with a nearby school to make sure bus transportation wasn't interrupted.
About 12:50 p.m., officers "made contact" with the defendant and arrested him, the complaint said. No guns were found in the house.
Drobac, 32, had apparently been doing some morning drinking. Eagan Police Chief Jim McDonald told the Strib, "Turns out he was intoxicated," adding: "Who in their right mind yells that out the window?"
Drobac has been charged with a felony count of making terroristic threats.
