Cub Foods apologizes for giving kids pill bottles with candy inside
One of the pill containers Cub gave away at a parade, unpacked.
Cub Foods has apologized for giving kids pill bottles with candy inside them during last weekend's Inver Grove Heights Days Parade.
As you can see at the top of this post, Brian and Katrina Leonida, parents of three kids, gave KARE 11 one of the bottles handed out by Cub representatives at the parade. It contained Laffy Taffy, gum, and a coupon.
The worry, of course, is that youngsters will end up thinking pill bottles they find at home contain yummy treats inside of potentially harmful drugs.
"We all have pill bottles at the house and so kids are going to look at the bottle and say, 'Oh, I got this at the parade, this one is going to have candy in it,'" Katrina told KARE.
Cub didn't waste any time apologizing for the obviously ill-conceived giveaway. Here's a statement released by Cub's parent company, Supervalu:
First and foremost, we want to apologize to those who were upset by this action. The intention was to raise awareness about our local store's pharmacy services, including flu shots, as well as provide savings to area residents. Additionally, we wanted to offer wrapped candy for parade attendees. Choosing to combine the two was an error in judgment and we fully understand the concerns some attendees have expressed. This was an isolated incident that we regret and we've taken steps to ensure this doesn't happen in the future.
For better or worse, odds are prescription drugs will become a fact of life for the Leonidas' kids before too long, as a recent study by Mayo Clinic researchers found that nearly 70 percent of Americans are on one drug or another.
