Christi Rowan will likely testify against Denny Hecker
Failed auto dealer Denny Hecker's girlfriend, Christi Rowan, pleaded guilty to bankruptcy and fraud charges Tuesday afternoon in federal court.
She admitted she lied under oath in Hecker's $767 million bankruptcy case about earning more than $150,000 a year. She also admitted lying about her income in order to secure a loan to buy a Land Rover.
And get this: Rowan has agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in Hecker's October trial on federal fraud charges. In exchange, her possible 35 years in prison could be knocked down to no more than six months.
Cold deal. After all, Rowan, a convicted felon and single mom, now lives at Hecker's Medina mansion. Before that she lived on Hecker's dime at his $4,000-a-month Whitney condo in Minneapolis. And Hecker's bankruptcy trustee figures Rowan is good for $425,000, including property and cash, which he said Hecker either gave Rowan, or made available for her use. Some of that includes numerous cash payments, a $60,000 fur coat, a pet dog worth $30,000, airline tickets to Mexico and Las Vegas.
But all that opulence is fading fast. Rowan has no independent income to speak of. The bankruptcy trustee has tagged personal property for liquidation in the Medina mansion. Her attorney, Janet Newberg, was appointed to her case by the federal defender's office at $125 per hour.
