Caitlin Compton of Minneapolis is top American XC skier
Compton finished 30th on the 10-kilometer freestyle skate--the best finish of the American women.
Gold medalist and former Minnesotan Lindsey Vonn may get all the glory, but Compton is just as serious athlete an athlete, albeit in a less glamorous sport. Last year we wrote about Compton's push to make the U.S. Olympic team--it hasn't been an easy one.
Unlike Vonn, Compton doesn't have lucrative sponsors. She doesn't get a lot of recognition outside of the world of XC. Her sport doesn't even make prime time television. But Compton persevered--after battling Lyme Disease this summer, she finished 14th at the World Cup in Canmore, Alberta in January. Now, she adds the 30th-place finish to her laurels--not bad when the competition is the world's best. She races again on Friday at 1 p.m. PST.
