Brian Lambert's brutal Strib TV takedown
NewsBreak, the Strib's TV news ... thing ... has been much lambasted, but leave it to Lambert to go straight for the jugular:
[W]hen you take a bunch of writer wonks, dress them up in their prom clothes and ask them to play Mike Pomeranz you're risking the whole thing sounding like a high school production of Will Ferrell's Anchorman, everything the internet is telling us about shifting tastes says the public much prefers honest informality to superficial authoritativeness.
Bold added. Lambert is exactly right. I'd been trying to put my finger on what was so bafflingly grating and obtuse about NewsBreak--why it felt so much like grandpa playing the Wii--and Lambert nails it: It's Old Media values in really ill-fitting New Media clothes.
