Bachmann surges into second place

Michele Bachmann left Tim Pawlenty in the dust in the wake of the New Hampshire Republican debate on Monday, not among Republicans in the Granite State, but also nationally, if you believe the polls.

She's vaulted into second place behind Mitt Romney in both cases.

A Magellan Strategies/NH Journal poll taken June 14-15 suggests that while respondents liked what they heard from America's Craziest Congresswoman, they're not about to pit her against President Barack Obama.

Here's how New Hampshire poll respondents ranked the candidates in the debate:

  • Mitt Romney: 39%
  • Michele Bachmann: 28%
  • Ron Paul: 8%
  • Newt Gingrich: 6%
  • Herman Cain: 4%
  • Tim Pawlenty: 2%
  • Rick Santorum: 2%

Here's how the same respondents might vote in their first-in-the-nation primary if it were held today, including three candidates who have not announced their candidacies, Rudy Giuliani, Sarah Palin and Jon Huntsman:

The Craziest Congresswoman vs. The Twitter Tough Guy.

The Craziest Congresswoman vs. The Twitter Tough Guy.

  • Mitt Romney: 42%
  • Michele Bachmann: 10%
  • Ron Paul: 10%
  • Sarah Palin: 7%
  • Rudy Giuliani: 6%
  • Tim Pawlenty: 5%
  • Newt Gingrich: 4%
  • Herman Cain: 3%
  • Jon Huntsman: 2%
  • Rick Santorum: 2%

Rasmussen Reports' new national poll of likely Republican voters also puts Bachmann in the No. 2 slot.

  • Mitt Romney: 33%
  • Michele Bachmann: 19%
  • Herman Cain: 10%
  • Newt Gingrich: 9%
  • Ron Paul: 7%
  • Tim Pawlenty: 6%
  • Rick Santorum: 6%
  • Jon Huntsman: 2%

At this rate, maybe we should start expecting a pot shot about "pain in the ass" Bachmann from Twitter Tough Guy Tim Pawlenty.
