Last night, a two-month-old baby was hit in the neck by a stray bullet outside a house on the 2400 block of Emerson Avenue North.
Here's what an MPD news release says about the incident:
Around 9:00pm this evening, Minneapolis Police responded to a 911 call of a shooting in the 2400 block of Emerson Avenue North. When officers arrived they found an adult male holding his son, a 2-month-old baby boy, who had been struck in the neck area by a bullet. The baby was transported to HCMC and is listed in critical condition at this time. The investigation is ongoing and the MPD will provide an update when information is available.
This latest troubling development comes in a year when violent crime on the North Side is significantly up compared to last year.
City Council Member Don Samuels told the Star Tribune that last night's shooting "is a gun problem."
"There is no city in America where enough police officers have been hired and social programs have been established where 2-year-olds don't get killed," he said. "This was a gun, a bullet, a missile that was shot from a safe distance for the perpetrator and into the neck of a child, with no warning and no defense possible. It's a gun problem... Legislators should be standing out here tonight."
:::: UPDATE ::::
The MPD is now saying that the shooting was an accident. From a release distributed by police moments ago:
After working throughout the night, investigators have learned that the preliminary information that police were given was not truthful. After re-interviewing the father of the victim, police have now learned that this incident occurred inside the house at 2413 Emerson Avenue North. The baby's uncle, a juvenile male, was also present at this house and was in the possession of a gun. Shortly before 9:00pm, the juvenile male accidentally discharged his gun, striking the baby. The juvenile then fled the scene and investigators are currently working to locate him. Investigators believe that this was an accidental shooting, no other suspects are being sought and the public is not a risk. The investigation continues.
:::: UPDATE II ::::
The MPD is reporting that an arrest has been made in connection with the shooting:
Early this morning, around 1:00 a.m., the 17-year-old juvenile male wanted in connection for this shooting, turned himself in to investigators at City Hall. He was arrested and is in custody at the Juvenile Detention Center. The investigation continues and charges are pending.
