Xavier Battle, a 7-year-old St. Paul resident, is in stable condition at Gillette Children's Hospital after he was struck while riding his bike by a woman who allegedly drove from the scene.
The driver, 39-year-old Kristina Jackson, was stopped by an officer who happened to be in the area when the accident happened at the intersection of Payne Avenue and Bedford street around 8 p.m. yesterday evening. She's been booked into jail on suspicion of DWI.
According to Fox 9, Battle has 40 stitches in his head, skin scraped off his legs, and broken bones in his back, but didn't suffer any spinal injuries as a result of the accident. He's getting an MRI today to examine other possible injuries.
Across the river in Minneapolis, two young female bicyclists have already died this year as a result of car-on-bike hit and runs, including 24-year-old Jessica Hanson, who died last Friday, two days after she was struck by a driver who ran a stop sign at the intersection of 28th Street and Pleasant Avenue South.
In March, 28-year-old Elyse Stern was killed by a driver who was later determined to be "extremely intoxicated" at the time of the crash.
