Amy Klobuchar rips Washington Post sexism on Elena Kagan
What a strange parlor game this whole Beltway press corps effort is, trying to suss out whether Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan is a lesbian.
"Folks are using fashion as a limited tool for making sense of her sexual orientation (Well, she's 50, a bit plain and never married!) and then going on to the larger question of whether being gay or not matters on the high court," writes the Pulitzer prize-winning reporter Robin Givhan, at the Washington Post.
Givhan then makes herself Example A, dishing on Kagan's clothes and mannerisms, and makes the mistake of dragging Sen. Amy Klobuchar into the muck and innuendo:
People tend to mimic each other's body language during a conversation, especially if they're trying to connect with one another. But even when Kagan sits across from Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who has her legs crossed at the knees, Kagan keeps both feet planted firmly on the ground. Her body language will not be bullied into conformity.
Klobuchar took to the Senate floor yesterday to rip on the article -- without naming Givhan -- while praising Kagan's nomination by President Barack Obama as an intellectual heavyweight.
The article described Kagan "in rather critical terms," Klobuchar said, "talking about, at length, her leg-crossing style. Now I have to say, Mr. Presdient, that I took note of this since it was compared to my leg-crossing style. I have to say I never thought I would be discussing this in this chamber."
Naturally, the nominee's defenders dug up lots of photos of her sitting cross-legged.
And, yes, we're really having this discussion.
Here's video of Klobuchar on the Senate floor. It runs about 10 minutes, with the WashPo rip coming in about half-way through:
