White Iron Band at the Cabooze
Nothing against good-looking skinny guys in close-fitting designer suits, but it's nice to have the White Iron Band around to remind us that fashion-unconscious bands can in fact look cool onstage. For a well-oiled crowd at the Cabooze last Saturday night, the eight-piece group manhandled white-lightning two-steps and R&B waltzes while paying homage to outlaw country and early country-rock, especially Nashville Skyline and the Band. One of the keyboard players even did a respectable version of Band hero Levon Helm's soulbilly singing. If only the stiff White Iron timekeeper had borrowed some of Helm's loosey-goosey drumming, the record-release party might have made Jemima surrender.
