Weekend Checklist: Mother Of Fire, Cro-Mags, Tapes 'n Tapes, and more

July appears to be the season where bands put out new music for you to buy, and let's face it, nothing says fun like a record release party. This weekend is chock full of record release shows, as well as some fine local music, touring acts, and outdoor festivals.

The Bedlam Theatre hosts the Mother Of Fire record release show tonight (interview here). Mother Of Fire's latest release on DeStijl is an absolutely amazing combination of influences as far out as noise and jazz to create a hypnotic, wholly engaging feast. This live show is not to be missed. With Paul Metzger, Brute Heart and International Novelty Gamelan. 9 PM, AA.

The Parlour Suite also get a party for their CD release at the Turf Club, with Greycoats, Bombay Sweets, and the Chord and the Fawn. 9:00 PM, 21+, $6.

The Cedar Cultural Center has an evening of classic West Bank folk with Spider John Koerner and Charlie Parr's co-release party and a screening of the film The Secret Of Sleep. 7 PM, AA, $12.

Gay Witch Abortion play Sauce with the Rockford Mules and Tonnage, 9:30 doors, 21+, $5.

Phantom Tails (feature here) play a CD-release show with Reckless Ones, Fort Wilson Riot, and Bight Club at the Hexagon. 9PM, 21+, free.


Legendary "back in the day" New York hardcore innovators Cro-Mags invade the Triple Rock for the first of two nights, 5:00 PM, AA, $25.

Rising hip-hop stars Big Quarters take the stage at Sauce with Black Blondie and Bight Club. 9:30 doors, 21+, $8.


The Walker celebrates youth in music with Open Exposure (interview here), an all-day outdoor festival with a bill combining established acts with young musicians. Tapes 'n Tapes, Eyedea & Abilities, and Total Babe are among the several bands playing. Show starts at 1 PM outdoors at the Walker. Free and All Ages.
