The Tribe and Big Cats!

From the latest of a series of stellar videos, The Tribe and Big Cats! features Smoke DZA on the celebratory "Good Life", played visually by a tiny Truth Be Told doppelganger in a Pee Wee Herman suit. But of course. The tracks leaked from the trio's upcoming Make Good album can be downloaded from their Bandcamp page, but watching the videos associated with the songs is a must.

Wize Guyz

recently covered the Wize Guyz in anticipation of their upcoming album '85, but as always, words don't do justice to actually listening to the music. Here's a cut from the album, exemplifying the true school vibe from Lojik and Dextro bring to their music, which can be even better experienced at their CD release show at the Blue Nile this Friday.

Bobby Phisher

Bobby Phisher's "Deer Hunting Deer" mines dark funk and a caustic but slick flow that recalls Eyedea and Aesop Rock, and here he pairs with Soulcrate's A. Def for "Untouchables". The album as a whole uses more distorted basslines and noisy samples than this track, but the nature samples in the background give a consistent vibe to match the cover, which features a deer peacefully cannibalizing a fellow deer's corpse.

Hecatomb's Capaciti and producer Jaron McDaniell are Earlybirds, and have dropped a number of songs dating back to 2008 on their Bandcamp, but are gearing up to release an official full-length this winter. The song "Padlock" is our first glimpse of this album, and features Big Jess, Mac S.P.I.L.L.Z., and Truthmaze. "Padlock" is made available via Truthmaze's The TruthMaze Experience, a free downloadable preview of the artist's work for Tru Ruts Records.

Manny Phesto

Another down-tempo addition to the Rooftops movement happening in Southside, Manny Phesto dropped this song with a video as a pre-cursor to what hopefully is much more to come. Coupled with related group Non Grata, prepare for a new wave of chilled-out hip-hop to flood Minneapolis.

After the initial verse in K-Nine's "Crossroads", you can hear the impressed sounds of his engineers in the background, a fourth-wall breaking indication of the young rapper's talent. The presence the young rapper brings in his soulful tracks can be felt throughout his excellent free download Best Kept Secret

Budah Tye & Stage One

Longtime Minneapolis rap veterans Budah Tye and DJ Stage One recently dropped an impressive 28-track throwback download that encompasses their years of making music together. The Sure Shot Brothers 15 Year Anniversary Throwback Album is wall-to-wall blunted flows and thick bass, and Budah's throaty voice and patterns are some of the best in the cities.

Illuminous Three and Mike Swoop

The infamous Southside crew is back with another free project, this time with beats provided by former Minneapolis producer Mike Swoop. Swoop's 2010 instrumental album New Love was one of the smoothest records of the year, dipping into dub, hip-hop and soul music with a combination of live and sampled sounds that can also be heard all over Ill 3's Montessori
