As Minnesota music fans await a local Replacements gig following their recent string of reunion shows in Toronto, Chicago, and Denver, we can at least get to hear the raucous songs of our favorite bar-band played by a slew of area groups at the end of November.
The date and musical lineup for the annual Tribute to the Replacements at First Avenue have just been announced, with this year's gathering celebrating the songs featured on the 'Mats renowned second album, Hootenanny. On Friday, November 29, local artists and bands will gather in both the Mainroom and the Entry to perform songs from the Replacements' illustrious back catalog, including a full run-through of Hootenanny.
The initial list of bands set to take part in the celebration is impressive, with many additional acts yet to be added to the lineup. And the entire night will serve as a benefit for the Slim Dunlap Fund and the Twin Cities Music Community Trust.
If you are a fan of the Replacements or just a fan of local music in general, this night is a celebration of not only the legendary music of the 'Mats, which has influenced the Minnesota scene for over three decades, but also the new guard of talented bands who are taking that sound in a rousing modern direction. Plus, last year Craig Finn and Greg Norton dropped by to join in the festivities, so you never really know just who is going to show up and play.
Doors open at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 29, for the annual Tribute to the Replacements. Tickets are only $10, with all of the proceeds going to some truly worthy causes. Be sure to show up early because the memorable moments typically begin as soon as the bands take the Mainroom and Entry stages.
Here's the initial lineup to this year's Tribute to the Replacements:
The Blackberry Brandy Boys
Mad Ripple Hoot for Slim
Vandy & Friends
Crankshaft & the Gear Grinders
--Plus, a performance of Hootenanny with special guest vocalists
And if you need any more convincing, here's a video of Craig Finn singing "Skyway" at last year's tribute, as well as an old compilation video we put together documenting just some of the great fun and fantastic music that was on display at the 'Mats tribute back in 2009.
