Last Waltz Tribute
The Cabooze, Minneapolis
Friday, January 4, 2013
Billing themselves as Big Pink, local music vests Rob Hilstrom, Jon Herchert, Chad Whittaker, Dave Russ and Pete Sands became the Band to host the 8th Annual Tribute to the Last Waltz, the Band's 1976 farewell concert that Martin Scorsese transformed into the legendary concert film of the same name. As in the film, the band was joined for a series of cameos by other local singers taking on the roles of the various all-star cast of guests that were featured in the original show.
The "Band" started the show with original opening tune "Up On Cripple Creek" with Russ ably taking the Levon Helm role of lead singing drummer. Hilstrom's take on Manuel's "The Shape I'm In" was next followed by Greg Huff, AKA "Lazy Ike" of Lazy Ike & The Daredevils's romp through Ronnie Hawkins' "Who Do You Love."

Many more guests were to follow including Kent Militzer as Neil Young, Jared Rush's Dr. John, Mark Joseph as Eric Clapton, Larry Fountain as Muddy Waters & more.
Especially noteworthy were Terry Walsh's no holds barred stab at Van Morrison's classic "Caravan," Reed Grimm's campy take on Neil Diamond, Ashleigh Still's ear to ear grin during Joni Mitchell's rather daunting & wordy "Coyote," Kelli Rae, Cameron W, and Sharondra's soulful interpretation of the Staple Singers and Dan Israel becoming Dylan for the closing portion of the set with sing along favorite "Forever Young" and leading the whole troupe through "I Shall Be Released" to wind it all down.

This band rocked a little harder (if a little looser) than the real thing but very likely had more fun (if the rumors of backstage squabbling during the original show are true). The whole group - with a few minor changes - reconvened Saturday for round two.
