Following a successful -- and lengthy -- reunion tour in support of 2009's Music From the North Country compilation and 2011's elegant return to form, Mockingbird Time, the Jayhawks are reissuing their later albums and reuniting once again. The Minneapolis alt-country rock band is bringing back together their Sound of Lies-era lineup (which formed after the departure of Mark Olson), with Gary Louris, Tim O'Reagan, Marc Perlman, Karen Groberg, and Kraig Johnson (Run Westy Run).
In addition to scheduling shows across the U.S., Canada, and Europe throughout the summer and fall of this year, reissues of Sound of Lies, Smile, and Rainy Day Music are on the way. Those releases will feature a remastered mix, bonus tracks, and expansive liner notes.
The band recently made this announcement on their Facebook page:
They say that there is no going back. They say that you can never go home again. But we are sure the hell going to try. Karen Grotberg, Tim O'Reagan, Marc Perlman, Gary Louris, and Kraig Johnson are thrilled to dive back into the darkness of Sound Of Lies, the joyous pop of Smile, and the simple elegance of Rainy Day Music. The Jayhawks are currently booking shows for Summer and Fall 2014 in the US, Canada and Europe in support of the upcoming expanded reissues of those 3 classic albums. Come along for the ride.
The band have recently announced a string of shows in the U.K. scheduled for July, with more performances to be announced soon.
But these reissues of those classic late-'90s/early-'00s albums will allow fans to dig deeper into an often underappreciated portion of the Jayhawks' back catalog, while also providing the opportunity for younger listeners to discover the musical gems found on these poignant, moving albums.
Here is the current list of live dates for the Jayhawks, with more to be announced soon:
