In the aftermath of the tragic and devastating New Year's Day fire at 516 Cedar Avenue that took the lives of three residents of the apartments -- while displacing the survivors and also destroying the Otanga Grocery Store -- the West Bank and Cedar-Riverside community is coming together to support and assist those affected by the fire.
The Cedar Cultural Center has just announced plans to partner with Augsburg College and KFAI Radio to host a benefit concert for the victims of the fire. It is scheduled to take place at the Cedar on Friday, January 24.
The initial list of performers set to take part in the benefit are:
Spider John Koerner
The Brass Messengers
Augsburg JIVE (Augsburg student ensemble)
DJ Go Getta with SYAV (Somali Youth Against Violence)
-- And more artists to be announced.
Tickets for the benefit show go on sale on Friday, January 10, at noon. Tickets are $20, with proceeds going directly to the families affected by the fire.
The Cedar's executive director, Rob Simonds, had this to say about the benefit itself as well as the tight-knit community in the area:
"This event is about the joining together of some of the community groups which call Cedar-Riverside (or "The West Bank") home to help our neighbors who have suffered such great and tragic loss. Our neighborhood is known best for both its immigrant history and history of arts and culture, so we feel it's only appropriate to assemble a wide diversity of musical artists for this benefit concert."
Here are the details of the Cedar Ave Fire Benefit. Check the Cedar's event site for updated information, as more acts will be announced soon.
CEDAR AVE FIRE BENEFIT. All ages, $20, 6 p.m., Friday, January 24, at the Cedar Cultural Center. Tickets on sale Friday, January 10, at noon.
