The Cedar Cultural Center has long been a somewhat unsung musical jewel of the West Bank of Minneapolis. But lately, the venue has been receiving some well-deserved praise for consistently hosting compelling, eclectic performances by genre-bending bands and musicians that run the gamut from indie-rock to Afro-pop.

And now, for the second consecutive year, the Cedar has been awarded the 'Best World Music Venue' in a readers' choice poll on The Cedar, which is a 501c3 non-profit organization staffed by friendly, music-loving volunteers, is in its 24th season of putting on unique, intimate shows on the West Bank by performers from all over the world, and this recognition is well-earned and should be celebrated by not only the Cedar, but by music fans throughout Minnesota.

Amadou & Mariam at the Cedar Cultural Center, 8/7/12 had these kind words to say about the Cedar: "The Cedar Cultural Center, the outstanding Minneapolis performing arts venue which is the keystone of the world music scene in the Upper Midwest, took home the glory in the Best World Music Venue category for the second year running."

The Cedar beat out such respected and venerable World Music venues like the CSPS Hall in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago.

The Cedar's ongoing commitment to bringing international musicians to Minneapolis continues throughout 2013, with their annual Global Roots Festival set for September, as well as their wildly popular African Summer music series, which continually features exclusive local performances by some of the biggest stars in world music.

The 2013 African Summer music series launches a bit early this year, with an upcoming performance from Fatoumata Diawara on April 12. The coming months feature scheduled performances from Femi Kuti & the Positive Force on June 26, the return of Amadou & Mariam on June 28 (after their uplifting show last summer), Vieux Farka Toure on July 9, and Fendika on July 10. More shows might be added as the summer draws near, so check the Cedar's website for additional concert announcements.

So, head on over to the Cedar to catch an upcoming performance and find out why they are not only the Best World Music Venue in the country, but one of the best places to see a show, period.
