(The old Cedar sign, before renovation)
The original sign for the Cedar Cultural Center was once as iconic to the West Bank as the Uptown Theater marquee was to... Uptown. Like the rest of us, it has aged over the years, and not necessarily for the best. Towards the end the lights no longer worked, the corners were rusted, and there were rumors of angry animals living inside. Last fall, the Cedar set out to raise funds to give the sign the facelift it deserves.
During their fundraiser campaign over 500 donors, including the McKnight Foundation, helped raised the $50,000 necessary to return the marquee to its original splendor. As a thank you, the Cedar plans to throw a free party this Saturday night following the Bad Plus CD-release show. Show up around 10 p.m. for the ceremonial marquee lighting, followed by fire dancers, as well as, according to the press release, "cheap beer" and wine for sale.
The Cedar is located in the West Bank at 416 Cedar Ave. S., Minneapolis. For more info, visit www. thecedar.org or call 612.338.2674.
