Dry the River
With Nathaniel Rateliff
Turf Club
London's epic folk-pop quartet Dry the River went to Iceland to write and record its second album, Alarms in the Heart, with Björk and Sigur Rós associate Valgeir Sigurdsson. The resulting intensification carries Alarms into sweeping, spectacular soundscapes punctuated by Peter Liddle's ethereal, cathedral-worthy tenor, lush arrangements, and guitars chattering with insistent irony when not ringing up U2-like swells. Liddle writes similarly melodramatic tales of love on the rocks, often dense with literary, scientific and Anglican allusions. The majestic "Roman Candle" is a slow, searing duet with the Delgados' Emma Pollock that invokes dragon's blood and the wicked tides of love. Opening is singer-songwriter Nathaniel Rateliff, a rural Missouri native whose deep personal ruminations range from spare folkie introspection to galloping rockers. $15, 7 p.m. -- Rick Mason
