As the winter gets colder, show-going slows down a little. However, this doesn't mean there aren't some killer shows to be seen! First Avenue is hosting an "unauguration" party for R.T. Rybak Wednesday featuring many local acts. Saturday, Riff Raff hits up the Fine Line while Crimes plays the Icehouse. 4onthefloor, Communist Daughter and All Tomorrow's Petty are also lined up to play First Avenue, and the Dakota welcomes Karrin Allyson for a two day gig at the Dakota.

R.T. Rybak's
Unauguration Party
First Avenue
Since 2001, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak has literally been stage-diving into the local music community, and he has regularly issued proclamations to honor folks like Doomtree, Har Mar Superstar, Trampled by Turtles, Slim Dunlap, and Leah Rule. To bid farewell to his time in office, he's lined up a bunch of musicians he loves: Trampled by Turtles' Dave Simonett, Chastity Brown, Liam and Francis from the Strange Names crew, and DJ Shannon Blowtorch. The event is a fundraiser for Step-Up. --Reed Fischer

Hugh Cornwell
The Belmore
The Stranglers were one of the leading English proto-punk bands in the 1970s -- full of piss, spit, rabid alienation, gnarly pop hooks, and a hint of the Doors. Singer, guitarist, and songwriter Hugh Cornwell led the band's wild, sometimes erratic ride until 1990, when he departed for a prolific but often under-the-radar solo career. On his latest, Totem and Taboo, produced by the legendary Steve Albini, Cornwell leads a wiry trio filled out by bassist Steve Fishman and drummer Chris Bell that at its best rocks with biting intensity, licked by Cornwell's stinging electric guitar.  --Rick Mason

Anaïs Mitchell
James J Hill Library
Vermont folkie Anaïs Mitchell can sound precious when her voice is at its most waif-like, but she can summon a great deal more depth and substance when she wants. She's also a thoughtful and ambitious songwriter who recast the myth of Eurydice and Orpheus as a folk opera in the context of American hard times. Her latest project, Child Ballads (up for a slew of U.K. awards), tackles seven of the often harrowing 17th- and 18th-century English and Scottish ballads collected by 19th-century folklorist Francis James Child, a resource for dozens of artists. Joining Mitchell on this performance on the Real-Phonic Radio Hour will be Bon Iver's Michael Lewis. The opening set by Eric Koskinen and the Real-Phonic Band will include Lewis, Dave Simonett, and additional guests.--Rick Mason

Riff Raff
Fine Line Music Café
A one-man symbol of the current times is the irrepressible RiFF RAFF. The From G's to Gents vet was born in Houston, but essentially lives on the internet these days. With the backing of Diplo's Mad Decent label, the rapper is expected to release his debut album, NEON iCON, next year. But for "the Rap Game [fill in the blank]" that date will be just the latest in an endless stream of idiosyncratic online babble surrounding him. Judging by the project's bouncy first single, "How to Be the Man," RiFF RAFF is as authoritative as ever, and ready to launch a winter party during his Minneapolis visit. Greenroom Magazine will be collecting toys at the door for Toys for Tots. With Allan Kingdom, Alex Wiley, and DJ sets by Audio Perm. --Reed Fischer

Karrin Allyson
Dakota SUNDAY 12.22 + MONDAY 12.23
Warm, slyly sophisticated, and glowing with seasonal cheer, jazz singer/pianist Karrin Allyson's new Christmas collection, Yuletide Hideaway, is a genuine charmer. Allyson, a versatile vocalist who easily ranges from bop to pop, is a superb song interpreter who can freshen up the most familiar material, as she does on standards like "The Christmas Song" and "Winter Wonderland." Besides Evans's nugget, Allyson digs up a couple more obscure treasures with local connections: St. Paul native Dave Frishberg's jaunty "Snowbound," and "I Like Snow," written by Minnesotan Patty McGovern (ex-wife of legendary jazz DJ Leigh Kamman) from a 1956 album coveted by collectors. --Rick Mason
