Hut! Hut! ... Hi there, Teddy Bridgewater's new pre-snap call.
The third-year Minnesota Vikings quarterback was heard barking "PURPLE RAIN!" at the line of scrimmage Sunday during training camp, ESPN reports.
Similar to how Peyton Manning yelled "OMAHA!" -- presumably a nod to the late '90s/early '00s Omaha indie-rock scene -- and how Aaron Rodgers yelled "NEW YORK BOZO!" -- presumably because New Yorkers are bozos -- Bridgewater appears to have made the allusion to Prince's 1984 film/album his trademark pre-snap call.
At least for this week. There's no indication whether Bridgewater will keep audibilizing to the tune of Prince. Perhaps he'll round the canonical bases, starting with cries "AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY!" (1985), then "PARADE!" (1986), then "SIGN O' THE TIMES!" (1987), so on, so forth.
This much is certain: Prince was from Minnesota, and the Vikings are a football team based in that very state.
The new $1.1 billion U.S. Bank Stadium will host big events centered around both this fall: The Vikes home opener September 18 against the arch-rival Green Bay Packers, and an all-star tribute concert to honor the late Prince Rogers Nelson October 13.
