Tapes 'n Tapes releasing 'Outside' this January
will be the tumulted Tapes 'n Tapes third full-length record, set for a very early '11 release. It will be their first - not counting their excellent demo CD - completely outside the confines of major-indie label XL (Vampire Weekend, Gil Scott-Heron, Titus Andronicus) and within the picket fence of their own ibid Records. That cover art reminds us of a certain other chart-topping XL release from this year...
Recorded at The Terrarium and buttered up by producer Peter Katis (The National, Interpol), the boys ooze weariness from several years spent in the maw of the hype machine. "When it came time to make our new record, it made sense to do it ourselves. Our contract expired and the music industry had changed immensely. We decided to give it a go. Most of all, we wanted to have fun making the record, and doing things on our own allowed us the freedom to enjoy the process of making the record. We weren't worried about if our label thought the mix was right for radio. We weren't making a record that a label was going to own. We were just making a record for ourselves." Here's to hoping the approach yields a record less mired than their last.
ibid's website - a little sparse currently - will no doubt be rolling right along very soon, and you'd be correct in assuming a long tour will be taking place very soon after Outside is out-in-the-world. An MP3 is not far behind, either.
