After hours of filling ashtrays and hurling whiskey tumblers into walls, the City Pages Lineup Theme Analysis Division arrived at a conclusion: This year's August Music & Movies series is all about movies set at summer camp!
The summertime tradition at the Lake Harriet Bandshell is back for another year, and sets from local music favorites are indeed leading into screenings of classic camp films. Here's what you can expect every Friday in August from the free, Star Tribune-curated event:
The August 5 kickoff will have kiddie-rap heroes Koo Koo Kanga Roo paired with 1995 fat-camp caper Heavyweights, which was co-written by a young Judd Apatow.
August 12 will see blazing choral collective Prairie Fire Lady Choir precede 1989 bougie girl scout romp Troop Beverly Hills, starring fleeting leading lady Shelley Long and future indie rockstar Jenny Lewis.
August 19 will feature Chastity Brown, the soulful folkie who's currently opening Ani DeFranco's tour, leading into Wes Anderson's 2012 outdoorsy coming-of-age masterpiece Moonrise Kingdom.
August 26 will combine the brotherly throwback country harmonies of the Cactus Blossoms with the pro-marriage hijinks of The Parent Trap, though it's unclear if we're talkin' 1961 Hayley Mills vehicle or 1998 Lindsay Lohan remake.
The bands start rocking at 7:30 p.m.; the flicks start rolling at 9 p.m. Pro tip: Sneaking in beer is easy, fun, and good for the economy.
