Soundset 2012 videos: Brother Ali, MaLLy, I Self Devine, & Aesop Rock
Soundset 2012 lineup announced
With Soundset 2012 less than a month away now, the Rhymesayers Entertainment folks have launched a rapid-fire barrage of new videos.
Conveniently enough, the guys featured in these fresh clips -- Brother Ali, MaLLy, I Self Devine, and Aesop Rock -- will all take part in the May 27 hip-hop festival at Canterbury Park Festival Field in Shakopee. Additionally, all four of them have new albums slated for release in 2012. This is label synergy at its most visually stimulating.
MaLLy & the Sundance Kid - "Shine"
From The Last Great..., due May 15, this track (download) is already one we've determined would bang out of Target Field's sound system. Directed by Dave Wilson, the clip displays Soundset co-host MaLLy touring some local haunts with the Minneapolis skyline at his back. May 18 marks the release party for the album.
Brother Ali - "Not a Day Goes By"
"If you don't love yourself, ain't nothin' I can do about it," Ali, another Soundset co-host, belts out over this muscular Jake One beat (download). Another Dave Wilson video production, this is a dark, menacing affair loaded with blinding spotlights. Here's hoping this is included on Mourning in America, Dreaming in Color, due in August.
Aesop Rock - "Zero Dark Thirty"
The only non-Minnesotan in this package, Aesop Rock has long been associated with, and compared to, numerous Rhymesayers rappers. Now, his relationship with the label is official. Not only will he perform at Soundset 2012, but he's releasing Skelethon via the label on July 10. Directed by Isaac Ravishankara, the clip shows the Def Jux alum sitting against a magical graffiti wall that is always in flux.
I Self Devine - "Exist to Remain"
The Sound Of Low Class Amerika, I Self Devine's brand-new album out May 8, is a considerable treasure. This soul-kissed beat is one of the many bursting behind his in-the-moment verses on this release. Directed by the Dave Wilson, the video expresses that the racial lines in our communities are still guarded and prone to violence. Devine's release party for the album is Friday at the 7th Street Entry (RSVP), and he'll perform at Soundset as well.
Finally, Rhymesayers rolls out the feel-good for this clip reminding us of 30 reasons to attend Soundset 2012.
