Songs for "I'm Not Going to Take It Anymore Day"
Every day is special. Yesterday was National Cuddle Day. Tomorrow we celebrate Man Watcher's Day, and on Saturday, Play God Day. Cuddle Day was good to me. I'll check out some men on Friday, and perhaps manipulate them come Saturday. But today, today is extra special. It's "I'm Not Going to Take It Anymore Day." Before you get that stupid Twisted Sister song in your head, here's a playlist in honor of the day. Girlfriend got a cheatin' heart? Hate your boss? Husband give you a black eye? Damn it, you're better than all that! Today, you can tell everyone to shove it. You have some national day-maker's permission, as well as mine. Listen here for inspiration, and go to it, then, you big badass.
"Take This Job and Shove It" - Johnny Paycheck
In this David Allan Coe-penned, Dead Kennedys-covered hit, Johnny Paycheck's woman done left him, takin' with her all the reasons he's been workin' fer. Notable line: The line boss, he's a fool, got a brand new flat-top haircut, Lord he thinks he's cool. One of these days, I'm gonna blow my top and that sucker, he's gonna pay.
"Independence Day" - Martina McBride
In an uncharacteristically violent song for Martina McBride, "Independence Day" (sung here with Pat Benatar) details the story of a young girl's mother who sets the family home ablaze to end abuse from her husband. Notable lyric: Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing. Let the whole world know that today is a day of reckoning. Let the weak be strong, let the right be wrong. Roll the stone away, let the guilty pay, it's Independence Day.
"Fast As You" - Dwight Yoakam
You hurt me, well someday you'll hurt too. Drinking, sleeping around, then breaking hearts aids in this process. Notable lyric: Maybe I'll be fast as you. Maybe I'll break hearts too. But I think that you'll slow down when your turn to hurt comes around. Maybe I'll break hearts and be as fast as you.
"Fancy" - Bobbie Gentry
Starvation or prostitution? A young woman's mother urges her to become lady of the night to escape poverty, and it earns her an elegant Georgia mansion and a New York townhouse flat. Sometimes it pays to be fancy. Notable lyric: Now in this world there's a lot of self-righteous hypocrites who call me bad. They criticize Momma for turning me out no matter how little we had. But I haven't had to worry 'bout nothin' now for nigh on fifteen years.
"Goodbye Earl" - Dixie Chicks
Wanda and Mary Anne are best of friends. Wanda marries Earl. Earl beats on Wanda. So Wanda and Mary Anne kill Earl. Wanda and Mary Anne don't get caught, instead open up a roadside stand to sell jam and ham. Notable lyric: Goodbye, Earl. We need a break. Let's go out to the lake Earl, we'll pack a lunch, and stuff you in the trunk Earl.
"Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way" - Waylon Jennings
Waylon Jennings and his fellow outlaw country musicians got a lot of guff from the Nashville establishment for not playin' like them. He wrote this tongue-in-cheek song about it. Notable lyric: It's the same old tune, fiddle and guitar. Where do we take it from here? Rhinestone suits and new shiny cars, we've been the same way for years. We need to change.
"Cum Stains on the Pillow" - David Allan Coe
Now, if you leave a man, furthermore, if you take his Cadillac and his blue tick hound, don't worry 'bout him none. The place where you used to lay? Well, he's happy to defile it. Notable lyric: I found me a true fine momma, and she got some damn good head. But I hope she's out there listening to every word I said. 'Cause there's cum stains on the pillow where she once laid her head.
"F the CC" - Steve Earle
Steve Earle, pissed at the government? No way! Notable lyric: So fuck the FCC. Fuck the FBI. Fuck the CIA. Livin' in the motherfuckin' USA.
"Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad" - Tammy Wynette
A subtle f-you song to a honky-tonkin' husband. You like ladies who smell like the floor of a bar? Well, then throw some whiskey on me. Notable lyric: I'm gonna be the swinginest swinger you've ever had. If you like 'em painted up, powdered up, then you oughtta be glad 'cause your good girl's gonna go bad.
"Hard Headed Woman" - Wanda Jackson
Wanda Jackson? She's just badass. Watch her sing, then adopt her credo, and repeat it to anyone who stands in your way today: this gun don't care who it shoots.
