Rap music: Is it here to stay? If 30 years of mainstream cultural relevancy has anything to say about it, the answer is "yes." Which brings us to today, and the announcement of the 2016 Soundset hip-hop festival.
The Rhymesayers-organized fest is set to go down May 29 at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. It's a new location for Soundset, which had taken place at Canterbury Park in Shakopee for years.
Some big names will be hitting the ninth annual fest, including hip-hop legends (the Roots, Common), younger superstars (A$AP Rocky, Future), and indie-rap icons (Danny Brown, Aesop Rock, Murs).
Atmosphere, per always, will headline Soundset, and Twin Cities faves - Doomtree, Lizzo, Prof, I Self Devine, Muja Messiah - populate the bill. Buzzy local upstarts like Finding Novyon, Lexii Alijai, Baby Shel, and DJ Tiiiiiiiiiip will be given the opportunity to shine on the big stage. MTV's Sway Calloway will return as host.
Tickets - $68-$88 general admission; $150 VIP - go on sale 11 a.m. Friday via this website and the Fifth Element record store in Minneapolis. If you sign up for the Rhymesayers newsletter, you'll be provided a password for limited $53 pre-sale tickets, which become available 11 a.m. Thursday.
