Because the good people at the Current and the Walker Art Center just can't help themselves, they've just announced that in addition to their epic 11th annual Rock the Garden festival, this year, they're throwing an afterparty, too. The festivities will be held at First Avenue.

London-based soulful crooner Michael Kiwanuka will be headlining the show, with local roots favorite Chastity Brown opening and DJ Jake Rudh giving the night extra atmosphere.

Kiwanuka's warm sound snuck onto the airwaves in 2011 with the release of his now unmistakable "Tell Me A Tale," that gorgeous old-school song that was our first introduction to Britain's latest soul revivalist. Since then, the 25-year-old Kiwanuka -- who continually garners comparisons to Bill Withers -- has seen his popularity explode. It's no wonder: the young man with the old soul taps into our deeply modern desire for a simpler time gone by, and that's just what Kiwanuka's debut album, Home Again, offers listeners: a slow-paced summer day, dipped in sweet nostalgia.

Speaking of old souls, local-by-way-of-Nashville singer-songwriter Chastity Brown is also on the bill for the evening, and a chance to see her filling up the stage at First Ave is well worth the ticket price alone. Brown's latest album, Back-Road Highways, released last spring, was the troubadour at her finest -- a collection of slow-burning blues and soulful gospel, a powerful record with a lot to say. Album aside, Brown is a true gift on stage: she controls the audience with each singular foot tap, a magnetic and captivating presence.

DJ Jake Rudh has been voted Best DJ in the Twin Cities by City Pages readers and critics more times than anyone can count, so it's no surprise to anyone that the Current has brought in one of their own to help orchestrate and close out one of the radio station's biggest nights of the year.

Whether you missed the boat on tickets to this year's Rock the Garden (featuring Metric, the Silversun Pickups and Bob Mould) or you just want to drown yourself in excellent music for hours on end, the first RTG afterparty is absolutely worth your while.

Rock the Garden Afterparty at First Avenue. Saturday, June 15. Doors at 9 p.m. Pre-sale tickets are $10 and will be available for MPR and Walker Art Center Members on Thursday, May 30, at noon. They will go on sale to the general public on Friday, May 31, at noon, and the ticket price will jump up to $15. More info here.
