Rifftrax live tonight at local movie theaters
Crow T. Robot, Gypsy, Mike Nelson, and Tom Servo. Last known whereabouts-- groaning before Danger: Diabolik.
Gimme Noise is always prone to statements of vast, ill-informed hyperbole. But when we say that Mystery Science Theater 3000, the cult show so widely popular that the term "cult" can scarcely be applied to it, is likely the most enduringly entertaining and conceptually brilliant television shows in history, we have a straight face. We can look you dead in the eye and say it, and we won't be crossing our fingers behind our backs.
And we can promise you that we'll be at AMC Rosedale tonight for the live broadcast of Mike Nelson's riffing of Plan 9 From Outer Space.
Since MST3k finally headed to that film reel graveyard in the sky in a decade ago, Mike Nelson, who replaced series creator and main character Joel Hodgson on the Satellite of Love for the series' final years after serving as head writer, has launched Rifftrax, a pared down version of the show that lets Nelson and a cadre of guests openly deride the worst our modern cinema can possibly offer.
Unfamiliar? Here's the deal-- let's say you're sitting on a DVD copy of, oh, say, Fellowship of The Ring. You've pored through its director's commentary, watched every making-of feature, every alternate angle and ever blooper reel, and you've at last convinced yourself, rightfully, that it's a crappy movie.
Get yourself to Rifftrax's website, where you can download an audio commentary track of Nelson doing the MST3k schtick in glorious stereo sound. Hit play on your DVD, hit play on the commentary track, and voila. Just like those hungover weekends you spent sprawled on the couch watching Red Zone Cuba (well, pretty much).
If that wasn't complicated enough, wrap your brain around this-- tonight, at several local theaters (see the list below), Nelson and the voices of Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot will be broadcasting a live lampooning of Plan 9 From Outer Space, the film so godawful that no "worst of all time" list is complete without its inclusion. Even better (or worse, depending on your sense of irony)? It's a colorized print.
Showtimes are at 7:00 P.M. Check out the list of theaters participating, and get in touch with your inner Gen X-er.
