Revitalized Viking Bar announces first concerts in a decade

As announced last week, revered West Bank bar/venue Viking Bar will reopen its doors Wednesday after a decade of sitting vacant.

Part of the revamp is a new, top-of-the-line sound system, and Viking is putting those fresh speakers immediately to make up for the previous 10 years of dormancy.

According to its calendar, Viking will host seven nights of music through its first 17 nights back in business. Old-school luminaries the likes of Cornbread Harris, Willie Murphy, and Curtiss A are set to hold down the stage in tribute to the bar's storied history. It's a roster of Minnesota music lifers that recommits Viking's legacy to the West Bank.

“We wanted a place with character, and history — not a dive, but a place with a vibe,” Viking partner Aaron Britt told 89.3 the the Current of the bar's remodel.

A basement level has been added, along with a totally retooled kitchen and bathroom. Still, the brick stalwart retains a lot of the character that made it a destination in past decades.

"We are the caretakers of this history," Britt's wife Amy added in a nod to the bar's tradition.
