Triple Rock Social Club, Minneapolis
November 7, 2012

Seeing Propagandhi play the Triple Rock on the day after a historically Democratic election is the kind of synchronicity that leads to legendary shows, and this one did not disappoint. The club was packed elbow to ass and the pit was a menacing affair as Manitoba's own ripped through a setlist heavy on Failed States and Supporting Caste material, but sprinkled with a few anthems for longtime fans.

The set kicked off with the recorded intro to "Dear Coaches Corner" -- a reminder that hockey is as dear to Propagandhi's heart as it is Minnesota's. Noting that Canada is just to the north, lead singer Chris Hannah led the crowd in the call-and-response "Fuck the Border." By now, the pit was a seething violent mass and fists were raised in defiance.

Seven songs in, bassist Todd Kowalski -- who brought up the energy like a victorious hockey goon -- thanked the crowd for indulging the new material, indicating it was a sign the band wasn't washed up and relying on its early hits. With that, the band launched into some prime cuts from their heyday -- "Apparently, I'm a P.C. Fascist ..." and the emminently singable "... And We Thought Nation States Were a Bad Idea," culminating in "Less Talk, More Rock," which was introduced with a nod to the election and the dodged bullet that was Mitt Romney.

With that, it was back to the new stuff from Failed States. Although not as catchy, the new songs always ended before they could wear out their welcome, though they did run together a bit at times. There was some stage bantor about cannibalism before "Human(e) Meat," but for the most part the band steered clear of the lengthy political lectures that led to the sarcastically titled "Less Talk, More Rock."

The main set ended with "Duplicate Keys Icaro (An Interim Report)" which shows the band in more of a prog-minded mode. A blink-and-you-miss-it time elapsed before the band returned to the stage for the encore, which included the crowd-friendly "Back to the Motor League" and culminated with "Stick the Fucking Flag Up Your Goddam Ass," a political rant that was the perfect antidote for the election mania: "Well if you're dumb enough to vote, you're fucking dumb enough to believe them."

Critic's Bias: Old school fan of "How to Clean Everything" and "Less Talk, More Rock" who hasn't kept up with their most recent forays into thrash metal

The Crowd: Aging hipsters in hoodies, still clinging to the punk rock ideals of their youth like a security blanket.

Overheard: "Magan ... she's a vegan ... she don't eat bacon."

Notebook Dump: Osama bin Laden is dead and Propagandhi is alive.
