Pretty Boy Thorson tonight at the Hexagon
Beware of falling objects-- Pretty Boy Thorson and the Falling Angels.
If you're anything like us here at Gimme Noise, your lives are just a little more simple when Pretty Boy Thorson isn't in town. Which is rarely a problem-- Pretty Boy Thorson and the Falling Angels, who rank among the best and most under-appreciated punk outfits this town can boast, spends a good majority of the calendar year on the road.
Which means that tonight's tour kick-off show at the Hexagon should find Thorson and his cronies in fine form. Which, for them, means loud, unruly, and wholly unpredictable.
What do we mean when we say that lives are simpler sans Thorson?
Well, a lot of things really. A vast majority of people who have spent quality time in the Twin Cities punk circuit have probably been shoved off their barstools, heckled, are crushingly bear hugged by a good natured behemoth in a crew cut.
That's Jesse Thorson-- frontman, songwriter, and public menace of the Falling Angels.
But we also mean that life is simpler without his songs. For people who were raised on a diet of sunch sentimentalists as, say Nick Drake or Elton John (yo), pop punk's ability to pluck the heartstrings is often questionable.
And yet, there's the Falling Angels, bellowing odes and overtures of heartbreak that, no matter how slurred the delivery or raucous the dance crowd, are heartbreakingly real. Being blindsided by Thorson's outstanding talents for song is a little like, well, like being shoved off a barstool at last call in Grumpy's.
Wherever they go and whatever they do, Pretty Boy Thorson and the Falling Angels are a sucker punch of everything bittersweet about having and having not. So don't bother keeping your guard up-- you won't see the blow coming until you're flat on the floor.
21+. 9:00 P.M. Hexagon Bar. Free. Pretty Boy Thorson and the Falling Angels, Dude Jams, the SB, and Amen and the Hell Yeahs. 2600 27th Avenue, Minneapolis.
