We're a little late in posting this (thank you, SXSW, you've sufficiently kicked our asses), but it's too cool not to mention: Paul Westerberg penned a touching and personal tribute to his mentor Alex Chilton, who passed away suddenly last week, for the Op-Ed section of Saturday's New York Times.

Here's an excerpt that includes our favorite part, in which Westerberg takes a jab at his own attempt to pay homage to Chilton in a song:

The great Alex Chilton is gone -- folk troubadour, blues shouter, master singer, songwriter and guitarist. Someone should write a tune about him. Then again, nah, that would be impossible. Or just plain stupid.

Head over to the Times' site to read the entire tribute.
