Occupy MN concerts announced: Grant Hart, Toki Wright, more to perform in solidarity

​In what they are promising will span into "weeks of action," the Occupy MN movement keeps expanding its presence with events that stretch beyond the live-in outside the Hennepin County Government Plaza -- and for the first time this week, some of the demonstrations will involve free live music.

Don't worry, it's not Radiohead coming to cause a near-riot or Kanye West coming to stand around silently and awkwardly. For the local chapter of what's become a nationwide protest against Wall Street and greed, the musical performances will be strictly Minnesotan.


Friday, October 14


11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

, a lineup of mostly hip-hop artists will perform a free show in Peavey Plaza as a prelude to a "March to Save the American Dream," which will depart from Peavey Plaza at 3 p.m. and head toward the Wells Fargo Center (

similar to a march that took place yesterday

). The daytime concert, organized by TakeAction Minnesota and the Twin Cities Arts Action Collective, will feature performances by Rhymesayers artist and activist

On Sunday, October 16, the demonstrations will move to south Minneapolis for a block party at Lake St. and 27th Ave. S., which will campaign for fair wages and worker's rights in the retail cleaning industry and is being organized by Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en la Lucha (CTUL). Festivities kick off at 1 p.m. with speeches by local workers, followed by music from 3-7 p.m. with headliner Grant Hart of Hüsker Dü, spoken word artist Guante, Brass Kings, Mayda, and more.
