During the summer concert season in Minnesota, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better place to see a show than outdoors amongst the natural surroundings of the Weesner Family Amphitheater at the Minnesota Zoo. The venue consistently provides an intimate concert experience with clean sight lines and pristine sound, all with the woodsy, rustic setting of the Minnesota Zoo serving as a dynamic backdrop to the performance.
The Zoo typically brings in a well-balanced mix of both classic and new bands and musicians to entertain area music fans throughout the warmer months, and while the initial list of performances on the schedule for the 21st annual iteration of the Music in the Zoo series tends to skew more towards older acts and lacks the indie-rock star power of recent years, there will definitely be more shows announced as the summer months draw closer.
This year's Music in the Zoo series launches with the venerable Joan Baez on June 6, with Richard Thompson performing an electric set soon after, on June 8 (with Field Report opening). Other highlights of this summer's Zoo lineup are Melissa Etheridge on June 28, Pat Benetar and Neil Giraldo on June 30, Cheap Trick on July 6, Marc Cohn and Mary Chapin playing a two-night stand on July 10-11, Dr. John on July 19, Trombone Shorty and Mavis Staples on July 21, Brian Wilson with Al Jardine on July 27, and the Rock 'N' Blues Fest on August 7, featuring the Edgar Winters Band, Canned Heat, Rick Derringer, and Pat Travers.
Tickets to all shows go on-sale on Saturday, April 27 at 10 a.m. Music in the Zoo ticket packages go on-sale a week earlier on Friday, April 19, also at 10 a.m.
