With the Turf Club closed for renovations over the next few months, the more events that can pick up the musical slack in St. Paul, the better. The Music in Mears series returns for its 11th season of free music and fun set in the serene setting of Mears Park in Lowertown St. Paul.
Between June 12 and August 21, 18 bands will play over the course of each Thursday night this summer (except for June 26 due to Jazz Fest and July 3), bringing their intoxicating, original sounds to Lowertown. Music starts each evening at 6 p.m., and finishes by 9 p.m.
Music in Mears' 2014 season gets underway on June 12 with Farewell Milwaukee and Galactic Cowboy Orchestra. Some of the other highlights of this year's Music in Mears schedule are the Melismatics with Benjamin Cartel (of Kaiser Cartel) on June 19, and Fort Wilson Riot and Communist Daughter on July 10.
Carnage the Executioner and Toki Wright & Big Cats will get things going on July 24, the New Standards on July 31, Cactus Blossoms on August 7, Greycoats and Chris Koza Band on August 14, and Ambulance Chaser (featuring members of High on Stress) and 3 Minute Hero will close Music in Mears down on August 21.
Music in Mears features intimate, special shows that bring music lovers to Lowertown St. Paul to celebrate the uniquely enjoyable experience of listening to live performances in a downtown, urban setting. And this year's lineup should only strengthen the bond between Twin Cities music fans and the tranquil Mears Park area of Lowertown. Again, these shows are all free, with music starting at 6 p.m., and finishing by 9 p.m.
