It's pretty cool when an entity from outside of the Midwest gets to come in and try to encapsulate what's going on here. Sure, there's an opportunity for public derision if you get it wrong, but MTV (Other) was committed to doing their homework for their episode for the This Is the Place series filmed here in the Twin Cities. [Disclosure: They asked Gimme Noise a few questions before filming.] Regardless of how it plays out, you get to see your home through someone else's eyes.

In just over five minutes, "Minneapolis: A Place So Cold the Music Has to Be Hot" runs down a wealth of local acts -- many of whom are associated with the hip-hop scene -- that are both established and coming up. Sure, Doomtree and Har Mar Superstar are known outside of our community, but the crew spent just as much time with the Chalice, Sean Anonymous, Greg Grease, and others to tell the story of what's going on here right now.

Also providing some narration and information in the clip are 89.3 the Current's David Campbell, who sorta gets called a local music hoarder, and the guys from Icehouse. A lot of performance footage from there, including a Marijuana Deathsquads set, gets mixed into the quick-cutting clip.

Tune in to find out how Minneapolis is exactly like Narnia...
