MinniHaha: This Week in Comedy, Dec. 9 - Dec. 15, 2008
There's at least one upside to the relentless tide of year-end reviews deluging weary readers this week: They herald the end of the most godforsaken year in recent memory. The economy collapsed, then found a way to collapse somehow even further; two wars continued to rage; terrorists targeted Westerners abroad with renewed fervor (those guys have all kinds of fervor); Michele Bachmann failed to choke on/fall down/tumble into anything life-threatening or hilarious (and got reelected to boot); and then Bettie Page died, thus freeing her specter to haunt us during the designated Happy Alone Time she once so enlivened. Plus, it's fucking Christmas.
Comedy, we turn to you for solace, and yet - alas! - the final weeks of the calendar year threaten to bring us the proverbial gifts of coal that are hypnotists and ventriloquists. Die, 2008, die!
But there's still some funny to be squeezed out of the Year of Our Clearly Otherwise Occupied Lord 2008. This weekend comedian/musician/wildman Darryl Rhoades will play five shows at the Joke Joint. He'll be joined by Wayne "Orange Luv" Burfeind, one of the Cities' hardest-working and most underrated comics. Burfeind is a member of the Minneapolis Comedy Death Squad and a writer for Drinking with Ian. Also: He's damn funny all by his lonesome. His stage persona is some amiable and unassuming, you won't notice how far into left field he's taken you until you're already there.
Darryl Rhoades and Wayne Burfeind Joke Joint Comedy Club Thursday, December 18 / 8 p.m. / $8 Friday, December 19 / 8 and 10:30 p.m. / $12 Saturday, December 20 / 7:30 and 10 p.m. / $12
