'Minnesota Remembers Vic Chesnutt' coming this November, listen to a track here
Each year, it seems like at least one compilation is released that vies for a spot in the top local records of that year. For the past two years, the Minnesota Beatle Project has landed in the top Minnesota albums section of our Year in Music issue, and this November a new compilation that pays tribute to the late Vic Chesnutt will be among the highest-quality Minnesotan records issued in 2011.
Most of the songs on Minnesota Remembers Vic Chesnutt were recorded two years ago, around the time of Vic Chesnutt's passing, and the project was spearheaded by Duluth singer-songwriter Luke Redfield, who also contributes a track ("Sponge"). Upon hearing of Chesnutt's death, Redfield started rounding up musicians to record their versions of Chesnutt's songs, and the resulting collection of covers is a showcase of some of the state's finest roots, folk, and rock musicians.
Minnesota Remembers Vic Chesnutt is being released by Minneapolis non-profit Rock for Cause this November 12 with a blowout at the Grain Belt Bottling Building, which will feature performances by some of the album's contributors including Eliza Blue, Adam Levy, Ben Weaver, Murzic, Alpha Consumer, Ryan Paul, and Gabe Douglas.
But you won't have to wait until the album's release date (November 8 on iTunes, and November 12 at record stores) to get your first taste of the record: We're excited to debut one of the record's best tracks, Haley Bonar's cover of "Gepetto," right here on Gimme Noise.
Exlusive stream: Haley Bonar, "Gepetto"
The release show on November 12 will also feature a few other unique acts: "Rock of Ages," a band made up of music therapy patients that is directed by John Ehresman of the Notties and Andy Thornbourough of Speed's the Name, plus an alt-country tribute set by John James and the Hall of Fames and a performance by Farewell Milwaukee.
"Basically, we are turning the Grain Belt Bottling Building in Lee's Liquor Lounge for a night," says Rock the Cause founder Scott Herold.
