A year ago this month, producer Mike Swoop dropped his debut album, the largely instrumental, jazz- and Afrobeat-inflected New Love. The album received positive reviews both locally and beyond, so to commemorate that record's release, Swoop -- who grew up in St. Paul -- is giving Gimme Noise the exclusive premiere of a brand new music video for the song "Up Late," one of the 13 tracks off New Love.
[jump] Filmed in New York, where Swoop relocated to last summer, the video has a chic, quirky style that fits perfectly with the smooth but funky flavor of his music. "Up Late" was produced by Galen Fletcher and directed by Andre Durand.
Aside from working on songs for a follow up, due out late this spring, Swoop says he's "leading a new pet project based on early '70s instrumental soul, jazz, and funk." Based on existing evidence, such a description bodes well for what's to come.
