In the smooth transition of power from R.T. Rybak to Betsy Hodges, it appears likely that there won't be any drop in the coolness factor found in the Minneapolis mayor's office. During Mayor Hodges's brief time in charge, she has started a 10-day "One Minneapolis" tour. It included a day entirely devoted to the vibrant arts and entertainment scene in the city, which brought the new mayor from the Walker to the American Swedish Institute and many other cultural landmarks throughout the city.
To wrap up a festive and busy week, on Saturday, January 11, One Minneapolis is throwing an Inaugural Celebration honoring Mayor Betsy Hodges at the Historic Thorpe Building in northeast Minneapolis. The music-filled soiree is free and open to all -- though you do need to register for your ticket to ensure admittance.
The music lineup for the inaugural celebration is a stellar one, with Hodges clearly continuing Rybak's long dedication and immersion in the local music scene. Chastity Brown and her band are set to perform -- as they did at R.T. Rybak's recent Unauguration Party at First Avenue -- as are Lydia Liza from Bomba de Luz, Big Jess from the Unknown Prophets, Carnage, the Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus, the Iron Boy Drum Circle, Sharon Day, and many other talented artists and musicians.
The event will be hosted by emcee Matt Brickman. The inaugural celebration will also feature plenty of local food on offer in the One MPLS Food Court, the B Girl Be Dancers, live screen printing with Kara Faye Gregory, art installations from Joan Vorderbruggen, poetry readings, and more.
Parking will be available onsite and at the Northrup King Building, with complimentary circulator buses running continuously to the event throughout the night. Guests are asked to dress "Minneapolis Chic" for the event.
