Mary Ellen Smith, local music writer and editor, passes away at age 60

Mary Ellen Smith, who spent 17 years as the music calendar editor at the Twin Cities Reader and later worked at, City Pages, and the Star Tribune, passed away Tuesday night at the age of 60. Smith was diagnosed with lung cancer just six short weeks before her death and passed away in her Minneapolis home under hospice care.

[jump] Ross Raihala penned a touching tribute to Smith over at the Pioneer Press, including an interview with her partner Michael McElrath.

"She loved music," McElrath said. "To her, it was an expression of people's feelings about life. Music, to her, was the highest art form... She was brilliant, giving, fun-loving and helpful. She was concerned with getting things right. She was also very outspoken and opinionated. You didn't ever wonder where she was at."
