Lovecat, Marvelle playing Music & Movies afterparty at Nick and Eddie warehouse tonight
About a month back we wrote about a new series called GenreBeast that's been taking over the warehouse behind Nick and Eddie every Monday night this summer. Over the past few weeks the event has grown into a cool culture-clash that intentionally tosses together bands from disparate genres as a sort of sonic experiment, and tonight's shindig (which is also an afterparty for the Music & Movies night in Loring Park) is shaping up to be a strong lineup.
One band to watch out for on tonight's bill is Lovecat, a new duo featuring singers Allegra Oxborough and Matthew Sandstedt. I caught the pair playing the Turf Club after the Pink Mink Boat Cruise last month and was intrigued by their delicate, if a little shaky, vocal harmonies and their cutesy, Postal Service-y electronic beats. They're obviously still green, but there is potential there for something excellent to grow out of their songs.
Another eclectic band on tonight's bill is Marvelle, who are second only to Cloud Cult in the live-painting-as-instrumentation category, and whose lead singer rocks a mean electric violin. The lineup is fleshed out with hip-hop trio Art School Girls and "doom metal" band Agonizing Death (full disclosure: Gimme Noise contributor Jack Spencer exorcises his metal demons in this band).
Here's the set times and a few audio samples:
9:40 p.m. Marvelle
10:40 p.m. Lovecat
11:40 p.m. Art School Girls
12:40 a.m. Agonizing Death
