Lizzo Sends Support to Barb Abney

Following Tuesday's news that 89.3 the Current had let longtime midday host Barb Abney go, her friend Lizzo put out a message of support. Like countless other Twin Cities musicians offering their condolences, her message comes back to Abney's tireless championing of the local community.

In a heartfelt Facebook video, the rapper recalls crossing paths with Abney ("bursting with energy, bursting with light") at a Lizzo & the Larva Ink gig at Cause in the days before the rise of the Chalice, GRRRL PRTY, and her solo career. "I firmly believe that a lot of my success in the Twin Cities comes from Barb's gift of gab," she says.

One of the most frequently played locals on the station, Lizzo recently took part in the Current's 10-day celebration of its 10th anniversary at the Fitzgerald Theater for a performance of songs from Prince's Purple Rain and took the stage on the first day of last year's Rock the Garden.

After admitting her shock regarding Abney's dismissal, Lizzo notes that the friendship, love, and support between them has stayed constant through their years of knowing each other.

"This is gonna be a piece of cake," she says, before revising her statement. "This'll be more like a shot of Jäger. Just shoot it down the hatch."
