The lovable lads from Liverpool lost their honorary fifth member when legendary producer George Martin died Tuesday at 90. That's the sad news.
But Wednesday brought happy news for car-owning local Beatles fans: Paul McCartney announced an extremely limited itinerary for his upcoming One on One Tour, including a May 2 stop at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
For road-tripping Twin Citians, that amounts to a four-hour drive southwest to the 13,000-seat arena, probably the smallest-scale McCartney concert setting you'll find.
Wednesday's press release promised redesigned set lists, "no shortage of surprises," and "massive screens, lasers, fireworks and, of course, a staggering selection of the best songs ever written or performed.” We're already staggered! Additional tour dates are expected soon. Our review of McCartney's 2014 stop at Target Field praised the knighted pop icon's grit and endurance.
Tickets for the South Dakota gig — $61.50 to $252 — go on sale 10 a.m. Monday via Ticketmaster. Amex cardholders — the most rock 'n' roll cardholders around — get dibs on a pre-sale beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday.
If you're trying to circle back to sadness (and who isn't, really?), check out the touching eulogy McCartney penned Wednesday for Martin.
"He was a true gentleman and like a second father to me," the 73-year-old wrote on his website. "He guided the career of The Beatles with such skill and good humour that he became a true friend to me and my family. If anyone earned the title of the fifth Beatle it was George."
