Judd Greenstein's NOW Ensemble soothes the Cedar on Sunday
Sunday is a chill night. We get it: winding down your weekend, recuperating, building yourself up for all that Monday will demand of you. Not necessarily a big night out. But what better way to clear your headspace than with an intelligent set from an experimental chamber group?
Judd Greenstein is a Brooklyn-based composer and artistic director for the NOW Ensemble, a new-fashioned chamber group that focuses on emerging composers and artists. The NOW Ensemble has been in residency for the past week at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, and is making their trek over state lines this Sunday.
Greenstein is no stranger to the Minneapolis music scene. Just last year, he was commissioned to compose an original "Musical MicroCommission" for the Minnesota Orchestra. His piece Acadia was an original work for the Minnesota Orchestra's Inside the Classics series, and was funded by "micro donations" from music fans and supporters across the state. Acadia premiered this past March and was received warmly. Greenstein has garnered a reputation as a young composer of to watch--a man who not only understands musical nuances, but is in charge of them.
You have the opportunity to experience the burgeoning brilliance of Greenstein this Sunday evening at the Cedar Cultural Center with the NOW Ensemble. The group will be performing an "extended set" of Greenstein's music, including Change--one of NPR's "100 Favorite Songs of 2011." The group will also be playing selections from Patrick Burke, Mark Dancigers, and Sarah Kirkland Snider.
Local music man deVon Gray, along with a new collaborative group called Chihuahua City, composed of Jon Davis (bass), Greg Schutte (drums) and dVRG (keys). Anthony Cox and Aby Wolf will also have guest appearances in the set.
Judd Greenstein and the NOW Ensemble will be playing at the Cedar Cultural Center this Sunday, November 18. Doors at 7 p.m., show at 7:30 p.m. $20. All ages.
