Britney Spears is back in the spotlight today for her new single, "Hold It Against Me," which leaked yesterday and was offered up on iTunes at midnight last night. Reactions so far have been fairly positive, but not everyone is stoked about this new release from Brit Brit--most notably, country duo the Bellamy Brothers, who insist that the new single is a blatant rip-off of their 1979 hit "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body, Would You Hold It Against Me."
[jump] "Back in 1979, I wrote a little song called 'If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body, Would You Hold It Against Me,'" writes David Bellamy. "That little song went #1 and has since become one of the defining songs of our career. If you listen to the lyrics of Britney Spears's new single, 'Hold It Against Me,' you'll find some major similarities."
Apparently the brothers started scratching their heads when their YouTube video for "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body, Would You Hold It Against Me" rocketed up 270,000 views overnight, and commenters were quick to point out the similarities between their song and Britney's new track.
"Howard and I have no personal beef with Britney. She's a talented gal," says David. But professionally, well, in all honesty, we feel completely ripped off. Where's the originality?"
Howard Bellamy adds, "Hey Brit... If I said you ripped off our song, would you hold it against me? Thanks."
