Ice Palace, getting by with a little help from their friends.
Rarely is a show so suited to its venue. The Varsity Theater, with all its opium den furnishings and velvet curtainry, its over stuffed sofas and vaulted ceilings, should make the perfect place for Ice Palace, a local troupe of pop rockers who have more than a touch of mood to them, to drop their brand new eponymous disc.
As exhibited by a slew of promising shows, as by the material they've posted on their Myspace, Ice Palace has managed that fine art of bending the notes without breaking them. Everything here has a "just-picked-up" feel, from the guitars to the vocal-- a rawness in execution that makes the compositions smolder like a coal fire.
The harmonies are haunting, the band can rock when it needs to, and they've brought a few powerful friends along to ensure there's butts in the balcony. With To Kill a Petty Bourgeoisie and Dark Dark Dark on the bill, it's a bill of music that compels a patron to distantly contemplate infinity.
18+. 7:30 P.M. $8.00 advance/ $10.00 door. With Caroline Smith and the Goodnight Sleeps. Varsity Theater, 1308 4th St. SE, Minneapolis.
